Pumba Foundation

Since opening in 2004, Pumba Private Game Reserve has not only focussed on being an eco-tourism business, but also supporting the surrounding community. As one of the main employers of the Seven Fountains area, Pumba is committed to responsible tourism, conservation, education, community and social upliftment. The initial focus on conservation programs has steadily grown to support projects specifically designed to bring cooperation and support to the entire area.

The Pumba Social Responsibility and Conservation Foundation is funded through generous donations and a voluntary guest foundation levy of R150 per person, per night. All funds are directed towards conservation initiatives and projects identified by the local community. Additional donations are welcome and greatly appreciated. For more information, please contact our Foundation Manager, Neale Howarth - neale@pehotels.co.za.

Education and Development

Community Projects

All of the projects that the Pumba Foundation undertakes will aim at empowering the community as a whole. Workshops that centre around skills development, such as leadership, service skills, public speaking, educational assistance, to name a few, will endeavour to lift the community to new heights by providing sufficient access to resources and training to upskill their current qualifications and enable further development within current and new employment opportunities.

Entrepreneurship

Our community is well known for its creativity and culture, an attribute that needs to be nurtured and supported. The setup of a co-operative space allows for the development of crafting and an outlet for goods and services produced by the community. Sales of goods produced by the community not only creates self-employment, but self-empowerment, with proceeds going back into the foundation to further uplift the community and its youth.

Sport Development

Arguably the factor that the community is most proud of is sport. Their love for an active lifestyle shines through in the local soccer leagues, as well as the passion for which they follow and support local and international sports teams. While there are local clubs in the Seven Fountains areas, there is no active school sports program and a complete lack of sufficient equipment and consistent support of those structures already in place. The Pumba Foundation aims to setup a functional sports program at the Seven Fountains School, while also further aiding in the development of the current local soccer and netball teams through such avenues as coach development, facilities management, transport and equipment.

Youth Development

Development at this stage comes in many forms and approaches. The youth of today are not simply developed in one certain sector, but through a variety of projects that will enable them to find what they are good at and develop in that direction. Sports, culture and further education are all developed within the community through training programs that can enable them to further their own involvement and studies. This is done through the use of focus-orientated projects in the form of sports coach training, cultural projects such as tour guide training, activities such as dancing and singing and the formation of a bursary scheme that will allow for excelling students to further their education at other educational facilities.

The additional aspect of up skilling forms a large part of youth development as well, in the form of training and exercises that will allow youth to develop into roles that may not currently be available to them. The use and placement of mentors in and around the community opens up the base of knowledge available to the youth in order to engage with career-orientated advice and see real world role models and qualities to aspire to. Consistent, long term involvement and investment will be the core goal to ensure the success of the youth of Seven Fountains and the surrounding area.

Welfare and Community

Early Childhood Development

In association with Early Inspirations, a local educational outreach program, the Pumba Foundation endeavours to focus on the crucial developmental stage of our community at grass roots level. By identifying the needs of the community, Early Inspirations and the Pumba Foundation team engage directly with the community by providing assessments, needs analysis and workshops with the necessary schools, teachers and carers in the community. The focus on early childhood development is testament to the long-term goals of the foundation as a whole, a focus on the future prosperity and upliftment of not only individuals, but also the whole community.

Infrastructure

There is an abundance of untapped talent in the surrounding community, talent which the Pumba Foundation aims to release through the establishment of bursary and funding programs, which will enable children to further their education outside of the local community by attending high school in Grahamstown and potentially a tertiary institution after their high school success. Additional educational assistance is also a focus of the Pumba Foundation, with regard to training community members themselves in educational support techniques in order for family members to play a part in the education of their community.

Conservation

Alien Vegetation Management

A sad consequence of the lack of historical understanding of biodiversity has left most of the Makana area littered with alien vegetation, such as black wattle, blue gum (eucalyptus), Port Jackson and a wide variety of others. Persistent focus has been placed on the removal of these species through water centred projects. Pumba has teamed up with Working For Water, a government funded project that manages the clearing of alien vegetation to free up water flow in designated areas. For almost 15 years, this partnership has cleared large swathes of land throughout the reserve and continues to play an important role in returning the environment to its natural state.

Education

Pumba has hosted numerous visits from surrounding schools and community groups as a form of conservation education and community engagement. The setup of a dedicated educational centre will focus at the furthering of this conservation and educational effort and allow for a more in depth interactional engagement with the youth in schools surrounding Pumba, in addition to creating a space where international guests and visitors can visit and learn about the role that Pumba plays in the community, the environment and conservation of the natural biodiversity of our area.

Wildlife

White Lion Conservation Project

In 2007, the white lion project started with a single white male and 2 tawny lions carrying to recessive white gene. After the introduction of an additional white female, Pumba has produced 4 litters of white lions, 2 from the original lioness and 2 from her oldest daughter. A key focus of the white lion project was not to limit the genetics to the white, or leucistic, gene, but to insure genetic diversity through the introduction of tawny, or brown, lions. Through careful management and patience, the 2 most recent litters, born to a white female and split gene tawny male, have produced litters with mixed colouring. This is an important factor based on the limited genetic diversity of white lions worldwide. Through our association with the Global White Lion Protection Trust, based in the Timbavati area, we are dedicated to ensuring not only the existence of white lions in the wild, but also the healthy diversity of the species.

Rhino Conservation

The devastating loss of 6 white rhino to poaching in 2014 has been ever present as Pumba continues to be heavily involved in the protection of white rhino in the Eastern Cape. The resulting effort of a combined security force of the private game reserves in the area has limited the Eastern Cape to some of its smallest losses in recent history. However, as poaching in the northern reaches of the country comes to a head, poaching activity slowly shifts south, leaving all of the private reserves at risk. The combined efforts of INDALO, the independent board of private game reserves, as well as internal Anti-Poaching Units, is a large focus of the continued efforts of Pumba towards the conservation of this highly threatened species.

Research

To create a better understanding of the needs of Pumba, continuous research has been conducted on numerous aspects of the natural environment by researchers on site and from Rhodes University. Research topics have involved the impact of large mammals on the vegetation in our area, veld burning as a management tool, the abundance of reptile species in the reserve and the cataloguing of tree, flower and insect species to track the diversity that Pumba carries. The support of the Pumba Foundation will allow for additional research involving both internal and external entities to further understand and support the recovery of our natural environment.
